Specs from the makers' own documentation Battery compatibility built in UK retailer prices, updated daily 25+ years of trade experience
About ToolPicker

The tool site we wished existed.

Full specs side by side, the battery platform you're buying into, and straight answers on why one tool is worth more than another. We couldn't find all of that in one place, so we built it.

Why ToolPicker

Specs you can actually rely on.

We love looking at tool specs. Before we buy anything, we read the spec sheets and the reviews, because that's how you make a proper decision.

The trouble is, the specs are rarely all there. One retailer lists the speed, another lists the weight, neither lists the vibration figure, and sometimes the numbers don't even match the manufacturer's own documents.

Even with the full specs in front of you, the real question often goes unanswered. Why does this one cost more than that one? Two drills look almost identical on paper, so which one should you actually buy?

Then there's the part most people only realise later. When you choose a tool, you're not just buying a tool. You're buying into a brand and a battery platform, and once you've got a few batteries and a charger, the rest of your kit usually follows.

We felt there should be one place that gets all of that right. It didn't exist, so we built it, drawing on more than 25 years on the tools in the carpentry and joinery trade.

Who it's for

Trade, DIY or just starting out.

Tradespeople.

You know what you need. You don't have an afternoon to spend digging through spec sheets and forum threads. Put the tools side by side and see the difference in minutes.

DIYers.

Buying for your own projects and want to get it right first time. Plain-English advice on what the numbers mean, and which features you'll actually use.

Apprentices.

Building your first kit. The platform you pick now shapes years of buying, so see what each one covers before you commit, and avoid the mistakes the rest of us made.

What ToolPicker does

Three things, done properly.

Compare up to three tools.

Full specs side by side, figure by figure, with the latest prices from the UK's main retailers next to them. Where one tool genuinely leads, we show you by how much. Where the difference is too small to matter, we say so, rather than picking a winner for the sake of it.

See what you're buying into.

Every cordless tool is linked to its battery platform, so you can see which batteries fit and what else runs on them before you commit. Not sure which platform suits you? The Battery Platform Finder helps you narrow it down.

Our method

How we check the data.

Specs come from the manufacturer's own documentation, and we use the UK version, because UK and US models often differ.

What's in the box comes from UK retailer listings for that exact product code, because the same tool is sold in different kits with different batteries, cases and blades.

Where we've checked a tool line by line, its spec table shows the date we did it. If a figure hasn't been published, we show "Not listed". We'd rather leave a gap than fill it with a guess.

We're new

Help us shape it.

ToolPicker is new, and we want it built with the people who use the tools, not just for them. If something's wrong, missing or could be better, we'd love to hear from you.

Spotted a spec that looks wrong?

Tell us and we'll check it against the manufacturer's datasheet and put it right.

Can't find a tool?

Let us know what you're looking for and we'll add it to the list.

Got a question we haven't answered?

Ask. It might become the next buying guide.

So far we cover 1581 tools from 9 brands across 43 categories, with more brands and categories on the way. We're also working on reviews from people who own the tools and use them on real jobs. Your feedback helps decide what comes first.
