About 18V LXT

In short

Makita’s 18V LXT is the world’s largest cordless tool platform, with over 350 tools running on the same slide-style battery. Makita launched LXT in 2005 and has since built it into the most comprehensive cordless ecosystem on the market, covering everything from sub-compact drills to twin-battery 36V tools, garden equipment, lighting, audio, and site equipment.

Every LXT battery from the compact 2.0Ah BL1820B to the 6.0Ah BL1860B fits every LXT tool with the Star Symbol / Yellow Battery Receiver. Two LXT batteries can also power Makita’s 36V (18Vx2) tools through the twin-port design, no separate platform or adapter needed. This includes large mitre saws, lawnmowers, blowers, and rotary hammers.

LXT is the platform tradesmen most often build a multi-tool kit around. The breadth and same-battery cross-compatibility mean once you’ve bought in, almost every cordless tool you’ll ever need is one battery away.

Strengths

  • World's largest cordless range: 350+ tools spanning every trade and garden category
  • Every LXT battery fits every LXT tool: true cross-compatibility within the platform
  • Two LXT batteries unlock 36V (18Vx2) tools without an adapter: mitre saws, mowers, blowers, rotary hammers
  • Established platform with battery design unchanged since 2005: long-term investment protection
  • 3-year warranty when registered with Makita UK within 30 days
  • Fast charging: BL1850B 5.0Ah reaches full charge in 45 minutes with the DC18RC Rapid Optimum Charger
  • Star Protection Computer Controls communicate between tool and battery to prevent overload and overheat

Considerations

  • Not cross-compatible with Makita 40V XGT: different physical connector despite both being Makita
  • The ADP10 charger adapter (191C10-7) lets you charge LXT batteries on an XGT charger: useful if you own both Makita platforms
  • With 350+ tools in the range, picking the right tool for a job can be overwhelming compared to smaller platforms

Questions

Which batteries fit Makita 18V LXT tools?

Any Makita 18V LXT battery fits every LXT tool, from compact 1.5Ah packs up to 6.0Ah. LXT is the largest single cordless range in the trade.

Can I use LXT batteries on a 40V XGT tool?

No. LXT (18V) and XGT (40V) are separate platforms with different battery interfaces. They do not cross over.

Can I use a bigger LXT battery on a smaller tool?

Yes, and it gives more runtime, but higher-capacity packs are heavier and can make a compact driver feel unbalanced for overhead or all-day use.

Do two 18V LXT batteries make 36V?

On the Makita 18V Twin tools, yes: those tools take two LXT batteries to deliver 36V while keeping you on the LXT system.
