In short
DeWalt’s 18V/54V FlexVolt platform is the world’s first convertible cordless battery system. The same battery pack automatically switches between 18V and 54V depending on which tool it’s fitted to, 18V for the existing XR range, 54V for the heavier-duty FlexVolt tools like SDS-Max breakers, table saws and 230mm angle grinders.
FlexVolt batteries are fully backwards-compatible with the entire DeWalt 18V XR range, so any FlexVolt battery you buy also extends the runtime of your existing 18V tools. The reverse isn’t true: standard XR batteries do not have enough cells to power 54V FlexVolt tools.
For trades who need cordless equivalents to corded tools, large mitre saws, breakers, table saws, ground-breaking concrete tools, this is DeWalt’s flagship answer.
Strengths
- World's first convertible 18V/54V battery: automatically switches voltage based on the tool
- Backwards-compatible with the entire DeWalt 18V XR range: extends runtime on existing tools
- Unlocks heavy-duty cordless applications previously only possible with corded tools
- Available in 6Ah, 9Ah, 12Ah and 15Ah capacities (in 18V mode)
- Same chargers as the standard XR range: DCB115, DCB118, DCB104
- 60+ tools in the dedicated 54V range: SDS-Max, table saws, large mitre saws, generators
Considerations
- 54V tools cannot run on standard 18V XR batteries: only FlexVolt batteries deliver the required voltage
- Significantly heavier than standard XR batteries, especially at 12Ah and 15Ah capacities
- Overkill for everyday drilling and driving: FlexVolt's value comes from heavy-duty applications
Questions
Which tools use FlexVolt batteries?
FlexVolt 54V batteries power DeWalt’s high-demand 54V tools such as large mitre saws, SDS-Max breakers and table saws, and also drop to 18V to run any standard 18V XR tool.
Will a standard 18V XR battery run a 54V FlexVolt tool?
No. FlexVolt tools need a FlexVolt battery to reach 54V. A standard XR battery only powers 18V tools.
Is a FlexVolt battery worth it if I mostly use 18V tools?
FlexVolt packs are larger and heavier than standard XR batteries, so for light 18V work a standard or PowerStack pack is more comfortable. FlexVolt earns its place when you also run 54V tools and want one battery system across both.
