Privacy Policy
Last updated: 7 October 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how ToolPicker (“we”, “us”, “our”) collects, uses and protects your personal information when you visit toolpicker.co.uk or sign up to our email list. We are committed to handling your data responsibly and in line with UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).
Who we are
ToolPicker is an independent UK power tool comparison website operated by ToolPicker Ltd, company no. 17455954, registered in England & Wales. Registered office: 2 Claridge Court, Lower Kings Road, Berkhamsted, HP4 2AF. For the purposes of data protection law, we are the “data controller” for the information described in this policy. We are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), registration number ZC251195.
You can contact us about this policy or your personal data at hello@toolpicker.co.uk.
The information we collect
- Email address: when you subscribe to our newsletter.
- Contact details: your name, email address and message when you complete our contact form.
- Usage and device data: pages visited, time on site, approximate location, browser and device type, and similar analytics information, collected through cookies and similar technologies (see “Cookies and similar technologies” below).
- Technical logs: your IP address and standard server log information, recorded automatically by our hosting provider for security and to keep the site running.
We do not knowingly collect special category data (such as health or political information), and we do not buy or sell personal data.
How we use your information, and our lawful basis
- To send you emails you have asked for (site updates, newsletters, buying guides). Lawful basis: consent. You can withdraw consent at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email.
- To respond to your enquiries sent through the contact form or by email. Lawful basis: legitimate interests (replying to people who contact us).
- To understand how the site is used and improve it, through analytics. Lawful basis: consent for the cookies involved, and our legitimate interests in running and improving the site.
- To keep the site secure and working, and to detect and prevent fraud or abuse. Lawful basis: legitimate interests.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files stored on your device. We use a small number of them, grouped as follows:
- Essential cookies: needed for the site to function (for example, remembering your cookie choices). These do not require consent.
- Analytics cookies: set by Google Analytics, only if you accept them, to measure how the site is used.
- Affiliate cookies: when you click a link to a retailer, that retailer or an affiliate network (such as Awin) may set a cookie so any resulting purchase is correctly attributed to us. These help fund the site and are described further in our Affiliate Disclosure.
When you first visit, our cookie banner lets you accept or reject non-essential cookies, and you can change your choice at any time. You can also control cookies through your browser settings.
We also use your browser’s own storage (local storage, and for My Tools photos its built-in database) for features you choose to use, such as Compare, Save and My Tools. These stay on your device, are only written when you use the feature, and don’t need your consent because they are needed for something you have asked for. Our Cookie Policy lists them by name.
My Tools
My Tools lets you keep a list of the tools and batteries you own, without an account, including tools we don’t list that you add yourself. The list is saved in your own browser, on your device, and any photos you add are saved in your browser’s built-in database. We don’t keep a copy of your list.
Anything you add to an item, such as the date you bought it, where from, its serial number, what you paid, notes, photos, or the name you type for the insurance list, stays on your device and is never sent to us. The only exception is a tool you choose to tell us about (see “Telling us about a tool we don’t list” below).
To show your list, your browser asks our site for the public details of each item (its name, photo and battery platform), using our own reference numbers for those items. Like any request to the site, it is recorded in our hosting provider’s standard server logs along with your IP address (see “The information we collect” above). We don’t use those requests to build a record of what you own.
If you share your list, the link carries those same reference numbers, plus a name for the list if you give it one, so the person you send it to can see your tools and batteries. Both sit in the part of the link after the “#”, which browsers don’t send to our server, so they don’t appear in our server logs. The link never includes serial numbers, prices, notes or photos, or any tools you added yourself. Anyone with the link can see the list and its name, so only share it with people you choose. Shared lists are hidden from search engines.
“Download backup”, calendar reminders and the insurance list are all made in your browser and saved straight to your device; we don’t receive them. Clearing your browser’s site data deletes your list and photos, so keep a backup if you want to be able to restore it.
If you’ve accepted analytics cookies, Google Analytics also counts how My Tools is used, for example that a tool was added, an insurance list was made or a list was shared, and roughly how long lists are (in bands such as 1 to 4 items). That helps us see whether the feature is worth improving. It never receives what’s on your list. If you haven’t accepted analytics cookies, none of this is sent.
Telling us about a tool we don’t list
When you add a tool we don’t list to My Tools, you can also tick “Tell ToolPicker about this tool”. The box is unticked unless you tick it. If you do, we receive the brand, model and type you typed, and the date. We don’t store your name, email address, IP address or anything else from your list with it, so please don’t type personal details into those boxes. If several people tell us about the same tool, we keep one record with a count of how many asked and the date of the latest request.
We use these requests to decide which tools to add to ToolPicker. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in improving the site. We delete each record once we’ve dealt with it, and in any case 12 months after the tool was first sent to us.
To stop the form being misused, our site keeps a scrambled (hashed) copy of your IP address for up to an hour to limit how many requests one visitor can send. It isn’t saved with your request.
Who we share your information with
We never sell your data. We share it only with the trusted service providers (“processors”) that help us run ToolPicker, who act on our instructions:
- MailerLite: email list management and delivery.
- Google (Analytics): website analytics.
- SiteGround: website hosting and security.
- WPForms: processing and delivering contact form submissions.
When you click through to a retailer, the affiliate network (Awin) and the retailer run their own tracking so a resulting purchase can be credited to us. They do this as separate organisations under their own privacy policies, not on our instructions. You can read Awin’s privacy policy on its website, and more about how we earn from these links in our Affiliate Disclosure.
We may also disclose information where required by law, or to protect our rights, safety or property.
International transfers
Some of our providers are based outside the UK (for example, in the United States). Where your data is transferred internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards recognised under UK law, such as UK adequacy regulations or the International Data Transfer Agreement / Standard Contractual Clauses, to keep your information protected.
How long we keep your information
- Email subscribers: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete your data.
- Contact enquiries: for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry and a reasonable period afterwards, then deleted.
- Analytics data: Google Analytics keeps detailed visit data for 14 months, then deletes it automatically.
- My Tools: we don’t hold it. It stays on your device until you remove it or clear your browser’s site data.
- Tools you tell us about: until we’ve dealt with them, and no longer than 12 months after first being sent.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to: access a copy of your data; ask us to correct inaccurate data; ask us to delete it; restrict or object to how we use it; request portability of your data; and withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these rights, email hello@toolpicker.co.uk. We will respond within one month.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal data, please contact us first at hello@toolpicker.co.uk so we can try to put things right. We aim to respond to complaints within 30 days. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
Children
ToolPicker is intended for adults and is not directed at children under 18. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The “last updated” date at the top shows when it was last revised. Significant changes will be highlighted on this page.
