In short
HiKOKI MultiVolt is one of the few cordless platforms in the world to offer automatic voltage switching, the same battery delivers 36V to MultiVolt 36V tools and 18V to existing HiKOKI 18V tools. Intelligent connecting technology detects which tool the battery is fitted to and adjusts the output accordingly, with no manual switching required.
MultiVolt is HiKOKI’s answer to the same problem that DeWalt FlexVolt and Festool 18V Twin (36V) solve: how to deliver corded-equivalent performance to demanding tools while keeping a single battery platform. The 36V mode powers the heavier MultiVolt tool range, large mitre saws, SDS-Max breakers, table saws, large angle grinders, and outdoor power equipment.
MultiVolt batteries are fully backwards-compatible with the entire HiKOKI 18V range, so they extend the runtime of existing 18V tools at the same time as unlocking the 36V range. The reverse isn’t possible: standard BSL18xx batteries cannot power 36V MultiVolt tools, only MultiVolt batteries have the cell architecture to deliver 36V.
Strengths
- Automatic voltage switching: same battery powers both 18V and 36V tools
- Backwards compatible with the entire HiKOKI 18V cordless range
- Over 1,080W output on 36V: comparable to corded tools up to 1,440W with the BSL36B18
- Same physical size and weight as a standard 18V 5.0Ah battery (BSL36A18)
- Newer tabless MultiVolt batteries (BSL3640MVT) offer up to 50% more power with same form factor
- 3-year warranty as standard, extended 5-year warranty for registered brushless tools
- Fast charging: BSL36A18 charges to 80% in 32 minutes with the UC18YSL3 charger
Considerations
- Standard HiKOKI 18V batteries cannot power 36V MultiVolt tools: only MultiVolt batteries deliver the required voltage
- The MultiVolt tool range is smaller than HiKOKI's standard 18V range (around 45 tools)
- Some older HiKOKI 18V tools may not be compatible with MultiVolt batteries: check the model's specs first
- Limited UK distribution compared to DeWalt FlexVolt: fewer trade-counter stockists carry the high-capacity packs
Questions
How does MultiVolt work?
A single MultiVolt battery switches automatically between 36V and 18V depending on the tool it is fitted to, so one battery covers both HiKOKI’s 36V MultiVolt tools and its 18V tools.
Can a MultiVolt battery run an 18V HiKOKI tool?
Yes. Fitted to an 18V tool the MultiVolt battery runs at 18V, and fitted to a MultiVolt tool it delivers 36V.
Is there a mains option?
Yes. HiKOKI’s AC adapter lets MultiVolt tools run off the wall, which is useful for high-drain work without swapping batteries.
Can I use a bigger battery on a smaller tool?
Yes, and it adds runtime, but MultiVolt packs are larger and heavier than a standard 18V pack, which can unbalance a compact tool.
