About 80V XGT

In short

Makita’s 80V max XGT is the brand’s highest-output cordless platform, powering industrial-grade tools that previously required mains or petrol power, 14-inch power cutters, large chainsaws, and heavy demolition equipment. The platform delivers 80V output by combining two standard 40V XGT batteries in series, there are no dedicated 80V batteries.

This means tradespeople already invested in 40V XGT can step up to 80V tools without buying a new battery type. Two BL4050F or BL4080F batteries deliver the same 80V output as a single dedicated pack would. Makita recommends using two matched-capacity batteries for consistent runtime; mixing capacities is allowed but the lower battery will limit overall runtime.

The 80V XGT range is small, around 8 tools in the UK, focused on heavy industrial applications. For most professional users, 40V XGT or 18V LXT remains the appropriate choice. 80V exists for the specific niche where cordless needs to match petrol-powered equipment in raw output.

Strengths

  • Uses standard 40V XGT batteries: no separate 80V batteries to buy
  • Existing XGT battery investment carries over fully
  • Same chargers and accessories as the 40V XGT range
  • Unlocks industrial cordless tools previously only available corded or petrol-powered
  • Same digital tool-battery communication and IPX4 wet guard as the rest of XGT

Considerations

  • Requires two XGT batteries per tool: runtime calculation halves vs. a single-battery tool
  • For best results, use two matched-capacity batteries: the lower battery limits overall runtime
  • 80V tools are heavy: most tradespeople won't need this level of power
  • Both battery bays must be loaded for the tool to operate: single-battery operation is not possible
  • Small tool range (around 8 tools in the UK) compared to 40V XGT or 18V LXT

Questions

How does Makita 80V XGT work?

80V XGT tools run on two 40V XGT batteries at once to deliver 80V Max for the most demanding applications, similar in concept to the 18V Twin approach but on the XGT platform.

Which batteries do 80V tools need?

Two Makita 40V XGT batteries, ideally a matched pair of the same capacity and charge.

Can I use 18V LXT batteries?

No. The 80V range is part of the XGT platform and does not accept LXT batteries.
