The verdictOur take

The VC012G is Makita's 40V XGT brushless backpack dust extractor, with a 6L container, 35 l/s of airflow and 20 kPa of suction at 5.7kg bare. Sold body only, it is ready for Makita AWS wireless start, has a 1.5m hose and a HEPA filter, and springs under the board shake dust off the bag as you walk, so it suits drilling and fixing on the move. We rate it a well-thought-out wearable extractor for XGT owners; the VC009G is lighter at 3.4kg with a 2L container, and the VC011G backpack vacuum has 40 l/s and automatic filter cleaning.

Tool weight worked out by adding each pack's weight to the bare tool, using the makers' figures. It runs on one battery or two, so each row shows one, then two. The maker's own with-battery figure can differ slightly. We may earn a commission on retailer links.
