About 18V

In short

Festool’s 18V platform is the German manufacturer’s premium cordless system, built around the AIRSTREAM rapid-charging and Bluetooth ecosystem. It’s the platform of choice for joiners, kitchen-fitters, and finish carpenters who value precision, dust extraction, and Festool’s Systainer storage system.

Every Festool 18V battery from 4.0Ah upwards features AIRSTREAM active cooling (charges in 24-30 minutes via the SCA 16 charger) and Bluetooth, which automatically starts a paired CLEANTEC dust extractor when you switch on the tool. The platform also includes a separate 3.0Ah Ergo battery specifically for the cordless sander range, these sanders cannot run on the standard battery shape.

The range is smaller than DeWalt 18V XR or Makita 18V LXT, around 60 cordless tools, but every tool is engineered for trade work where finish quality and integration with dust extraction matter more than raw cordless coverage.

Strengths

  • AIRSTREAM rapid charging: most packs ready to use again in 24–30 minutes
  • Bluetooth pairing auto-starts the CLEANTEC dust extractor when the tool fires up
  • Festool App integration shows real-time charge level, temperature, charge cycles
  • Tabless cell technology on the latest TBX 4 and TBX 8 packs: more power, longer life
  • 3-year warranty when registered through Festool Service
  • Premium build and finish: best-in-class fit and integration with Systainer storage

Considerations

  • Smaller tool range than DeWalt 18V XR or Makita 18V LXT: around 60 tools
  • The BP 18 3,0 Ergo battery only fits cordless sanders, and the sanders only fit that battery: a separate sub-platform within Festool 18V
  • TBX 4 and TBX 8 batteries replaced the older Li-HighPower 4.0Ah and 8.0Ah packs in April 2026: older stock still on shelves

Questions

Which batteries fit Festool 18V tools?

Festool 18V tools take the Festool 18V battery (4.0Ah and up, with AIRSTREAM cooling and Bluetooth). Note that the cordless sander range uses a separate 3.0Ah Ergo battery.

What does the Bluetooth battery do?

A Bluetooth Festool 18V battery automatically starts a paired CLEANTEC dust extractor when you switch the tool on, so the vacuum only runs while you are cutting or sanding.

Can I use a bigger battery on a smaller tool?

Yes, though larger packs add weight. Most Festool 18V tools are designed around the standard pack size for balance.

Do Festool sanders use the same battery?

No. The cordless sanders use the separate BP 18 Ergo battery, and that battery only fits the sanders.
