About M18

In short

Milwaukee’s M18 is the UK’s third-largest professional cordless platform, with over 250 tools spanning every trade. Milwaukee positions M18 specifically against DeWalt 18V XR and Makita 18V LXT, and has built a reputation for delivering corded-equivalent performance from cordless tools, particularly in plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and demolition trades.

Every M18 battery, from the compact CP3.0 to the heavyweight HB12, fits every M18 tool. The platform uses Milwaukee’s REDLINK and RedLink Plus intelligent tool-battery communication to optimise performance and protect against overload, over-discharge, and overheating. The newer High Output (“HB” prefix) and FORGE battery families use 21700 lithium-ion cells for higher peak current and lower heat generation under sustained load.

M18 is the platform of choice for sub-contractors who need a single cordless system to run everything from impact drivers to hammer drills, hammer breakers, table saws, and the rapidly expanding Packout-integrated jobsite ecosystem.

Strengths

  • 250+ tools across every trade: drills, drivers, plumbing, electrical, demolition, garden, lighting
  • Every M18 battery fits every M18 tool: full cross-compatibility within the platform since 2008
  • High Output (HB) batteries use larger 21700 cells for more sustained power and less heat
  • REDLINK PLUS digital intelligence between tool and battery prevents overload and overheat
  • Industry-leading IP54 dust and water resistance on most M18 tools
  • Strong Packout storage ecosystem: tools, batteries, and accessories integrate physically
  • Newest FORGE batteries charge in just 40 minutes for the 6.0Ah variant

Considerations

  • HB and FORGE batteries are noticeably heavier than equivalent capacity batteries from DeWalt or Makita
  • Older XC and HD batteries have been largely superseded by the High Output range: older stock may still be sold
  • Older Milwaukee tools (pre-2014) may have minor physical compatibility issues with newer HB batteries, though Milwaukee will update affected tools for free
  • No 36V / twin-battery configurations: Milwaukee's higher-power range is the separate MX FUEL platform

Questions

Which batteries fit Milwaukee M18 tools?

Every M18 battery fits every M18 tool, from the compact CP3.0 up to the High Output HB12 and the FORGE packs. Full cross-compatibility across the platform.

What is the difference between HB and FORGE batteries?

High Output (HB) packs use larger 21700 cells for more sustained power and less heat than standard packs. FORGE is the newest range, with faster charging and higher output again. Both fit any M18 tool.

Can I use M12 batteries on an M18 tool?

No. M18 (18V) and M12 (12V) are separate systems and their batteries do not interchange.

Can I use a bigger battery on a smaller tool?

Yes, and you gain runtime, but the HB and FORGE packs are noticeably heavier than standard packs, which can unbalance a compact tool for overhead or all-day work.
