About 12V CXT

In short

Makita’s 12V CXT is the brand’s sub-compact cordless platform, designed for trades who need precision and reach over raw power. Electricians working in consumer units, plumbers in tight joist spaces, kitchen-fitters, and finish carpenters all favour CXT for its slim profile and reduced weight.

CXT uses a slide-style battery, the same fitting philosophy as Makita’s 18V LXT range, meaning all CXT batteries fit all CXT tools. The platform replaced Makita’s older 10.8V pod-style range and is not compatible with those older tools or chargers. Around 25 cordless tools in the current UK CXT range covers drills, drivers, impact wrenches, oscillating tools, work lights, radios, and inspection cameras.

CXT is completely separate from Makita’s 18V LXT and 40V XGT platforms, different physical connector, no cross-compatibility. For tradespeople primarily working on light-to-medium tasks where tool size and weight matter more than runtime, it’s the cleanest 12V offering on the market.

Strengths

  • Slide-style batteries: same fitting philosophy as 18V LXT, allows tools to stand upright
  • Compact and lightweight: typical CXT drill weighs around 1.1kg with battery
  • Brushless motors on most modern CXT tools: longer runtime and tool life
  • Charges fast: BL1041B 4.0Ah reaches full charge in 60 minutes with DC10WD
  • LED charge indicator on every battery
  • 3-year warranty when registered with Makita UK within 30 days

Considerations

  • Not compatible with older 10.8V Makita pod-style tools or chargers: CXT replaced that range
  • Smaller tool selection than 18V LXT: 25 tools vs over 350
  • Limited heavy-duty options: for serious drilling, cutting, or grinding, 18V LXT is the right platform
  • No cross-compatibility with Makita 18V LXT or 40V XGT: separate physical connector

Questions

Which batteries fit Makita 12V CXT tools?

The Makita 12V Max CXT system uses its own slide-style 12V battery, in capacities such as 1.5Ah, 2.0Ah and 4.0Ah.

Can I use an 18V LXT battery on a CXT tool?

No. CXT (12V) and LXT (18V) are separate systems with different batteries.

What is CXT best for?

Lightweight first-fix and electrical work where a compact, low-weight tool matters more than power.
