About 18V XR

In short

DeWalt’s 18V XR platform is the UK’s most widely-stocked professional cordless system, with over 250 tools engineered to meet the specific needs of the most demanding trades. The XR range covers everything from compact drill drivers through to SDS-Max breakers, lawnmowers and site lighting, with brushless motors across most of the modern range.

The platform is fully cross-compatible: any XR slide-style 18V battery, whether a compact 2.0Ah pack, a 5.0Ah PowerStack, or a 15Ah FlexVolt, will fit any 18V XR tool. FlexVolt batteries automatically drop to 18V when fitted to an XR tool, which means a single battery pack can power both your standard XR drill and your 54V FlexVolt mitre saw.

Strengths

  • Largest UK cordless range: 250+ tools from compact drills to SDS-Max breakers
  • Available at every major retailer: Screwfix, Toolstation, B&Q, ITS, Amazon
  • Three battery technologies in one slide format: standard Li-ion, PowerStack pouch cells, and FlexVolt (18V/54V)
  • PowerStack delivers 50% more peak power than standard XR cells in a lighter, more compact pack
  • FlexVolt batteries unlock 54V tools without switching platform: your XR drill and FlexVolt mitre saw share the same chargers
  • Brushless motors across most of the modern XR range

Considerations

  • POWERSTACK packs are best kept for high-draw tools like impacts and grinders: compare their prices with the standard XR packs on this page
  • Standard XR batteries cannot power 54V FlexVolt tools: only FlexVolt batteries run both ranges
  • The 18V XR platform is completely separate from DeWalt's 12V XR sub-compact range: they share a brand name but no batteries or tools

Questions

Which batteries fit DeWalt 18V XR tools?

Any DeWalt 18V XR slide-style battery fits, from a compact 2.0Ah pack up to a 5.0Ah PowerStack. FlexVolt 54V batteries also fit and run the tool at 18V.

Will a FlexVolt battery run an 18V XR tool?

Yes. A FlexVolt 54V battery automatically drops to 18V when fitted to an XR tool, so one FlexVolt pack can power both your 18V XR tools and your 54V FlexVolt tools.

Can I use a bigger battery on a smaller tool?

Yes, a higher-capacity XR battery gives longer runtime, but the larger packs (especially FlexVolt) add weight and bulk that can make a compact tool feel unbalanced for overhead or all-day work.

What is PowerStack?

PowerStack is a DeWalt XR battery that uses pouch cells instead of cylindrical cells. It delivers more peak power in a smaller, lighter pack and fits the same 18V XR tools. It is a battery type, not a separate platform.
