About DeWalt

In short

DeWalt is a US brand (part of Stanley Black & Decker), founded in 1924 and one of the most recognised names in UK trade. Its cordless range is built on the 18V XR platform, with 54V FlexVolt batteries that step up to power larger tools while still running XR tools at 18V, so one battery covers two systems. DeWalt also brought in POWERSTACK pouch-cell batteries for more power in a smaller pack, and the compact ATOMIC line for tight-access work. It is a strong all-rounder with the widest UK stockist presence of any brand, competing hardest with Makita on the core 18V range. Storage runs on TOUGHSYSTEM and TSTAK.

Strengths

  • FlexVolt: one 54V battery powers big tools and still runs 18V XR tools
  • POWERSTACK pouch-cell batteries pack more power into a smaller unit
  • ATOMIC compact range for tight-access work
  • Widest UK stockist and deal presence of any brand
  • Huge 18V XR tool lineup

Considerations

  • Batteries and chargers are excluded from the 3-year warranty extension (POWERSTACK is eligible)
  • 3-year cover needs registration within 4 weeks (1 year otherwise)

Questions

What is FlexVolt?

FlexVolt is DeWalt’s 54V battery that automatically switches to 18V to run standard XR tools, so one battery powers both the big FlexVolt tools and the everyday 18V range.

Does DeWalt offer a 3-year warranty?

Yes, once you register the tool within 4 weeks of purchase. Without registration it is 1 year. Batteries and chargers are excluded, though POWERSTACK batteries are eligible.

What is POWERSTACK?

POWERSTACK is DeWalt’s pouch-cell battery. It packs more power into a smaller, lighter unit than standard cylindrical-cell packs and fits the same 18V XR tools.

Are DeWalt 18V and 54V batteries compatible?

Yes. FlexVolt 54V batteries run 18V XR tools at 18V, and 18V XR batteries run standard XR tools. FlexVolt tools themselves need a FlexVolt battery.
